We commemorate the 39th anniversary of the brutal murder of the great Leandro Alejandro. He was assassinated on 19 September 1987, a year after the fall of the tyrannical Marcos government, which he helped overthrow.
Were he alive today, Lean would remind us that the past is not about the great deeds performed by great men in great events. He would tell us history is a flow that leaves us patterns that help us navigate current crises. Lean’s life tells us the heroism of our people is not about two canopy trees alone but a living forest that often begins with pioneer trees like the bignay or balete, which take root in stony, arid land, their roots and fallen leaves, branches, and trunks eventually enriching the soil and inviting more plants, mycelial networks, and other living things to find a home and later thrive.
